Tell Me It Ain't So Kevin

A new rumor is floating around local political circles. It centers on county commissioner Kevin Beckner, and whether he was actually a certified law enforcement officer years ago as claimed in his campaign literature.

The rumor and allegation are: during his college years at Indiana University, he was a police trainee…a cadet…and never finished his training or became “certified.”

I hope this is not true and not a third degree felony as some claim. Beckner seems a good guy who would not need to embellish his resume.

On the other hand, if it is true, I not only blame Beckner for an unnecessary exaggeration, but I blame the lazy press for lousy reporting and vetting. After all, he was the media darling when campaigning against their evil Brian Blair. This wouldn’t be the first time the local press ignored negative information about someone they adored.

During the past election, the local press was happy to overlook letters and documents proving school board candidate Stephen Gorham was not a Plant City Volunteer Firefighter as advertised. The same was true when documents proved hours of cell phone calls between April Griffin and Susan Valdes.

Had anyone proved Government in the Sunshine violations between Brian Blair and Jim Norman, or poor ole Buddy Johnson, the headlines would have blazed.

Of course, if I was paying my soon to be ex-wife $64,000 a month and she was using it to hang out with a 20-year old surfer boy, I might conjure some evil thoughts while sipping some sour mash. I’d never go the murder route though. I’d rather spread the rumor that she had the incurable venereal disease called penis dropoffus. That’d keep the land sharks at bay.
