No Schmidt Sherlock

As the Tribune reported recently, the Hillsborough School District cannot account for almost 500 laptop computers over the past three years. All are reported lost or stolen.

That is a huge figure tied to employee negligence and/or criminal activities.

Just within the program I manage, we have a main office and computer lab, and we also have two satellite sites with offices and computer labs. We spend much time, effort, and diligence keeping track of our equipment. Glad to say we have yet to lose anything. You get the point, though. A big school has many more areas to cover.

The school board voted this past Tuesday to pay supplier Hewlett Packard to engrave “Property of Hillsborough Public Schools” on each future computer that’s purchased. The thinking is, with that engraving, stolen laptops cannot be sold or pawned as easily. Makes sense.

When asked for comment of this action, April Griffin is quoted as saying, “The money we spend on replacing these items is money that could be spent in other places. In this economy, we need to be mindful of that.”

Duh!!!!! So in a better economy, we can be less mindful of losing 490 laptops?

Mugshots

The online website for the SP Times, www.tampbay.com, has a new feature called Tampa Bay Mugshots. It contains the pictures, names, and offenses of those arrested each day within Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties.

First thing that amazed me were the sheer numbers of people arrested every day. The second was: how many are busted for not having a drivers license and how many are busted for marijuana possession.

Another fascination is looking at some faces and eyes and knowing this is not a first arrest. One other surprise is the number of young Susies or Muffies busted for drunk driving, particularly on weekends.
I keep waiting to see someone I know, perhaps busted after leaving the Green Iguana Bar and Grill.
