I Was Too Hard On April
Most people will agree with the idea that when I married years ago, I married up---way up.As a result, I spend many moments of many days saying things like, “yes dear,” “no dear,” “you’re right dear.”
Last Friday evening, after posting my thoughts on board member April Griffin and her GED, I endured a long lecture about disrespecting Mrs. Griffin’s achievements, that GEDs have true academic value, that those who earn GEDs can be extremely intelligent people. My wife, Janice, went to say that the end of my Friday post was rude and crude, undignified, a horrible analogy.
As always, I groveled a bit and mumbled many yes dears, you’re right dears.
So April…..I apologize for demeaning your GED. You no doubt worked hard to earn it. I have no doubt you are an intelligent woman.
I also apologize for using the word “turd” anywhere close to your name or for using that same word to demean your motives.
But….in all deference to my lovely wife, I will make another analogy. In my many years on this planet, I’ve been to the doctor a few times. I’ve seen how a doctor’s office is managed, had my blood pressure taken, and even had an X-Ray once. Does that make me qualified to be on the board of the American Medical Association?
A GED is a good start to finding a job. If it qualifies anyone for analyzing curriculum or classroom instruction for the Hillsborough School District…..then the Pillsbury Doughboy is a pierogi.

Dave, does a senator have to be a retired general to be on the Armed Forces committee? No. Does a Museum Board member have to have a degree in art history? No. Boards serve the purpose of oversight. I think that intelligence, vision, and moral fortitude are more important than any piece of paper an imdividual may hold. Your continued attacks on April Griffin make it all the more clear to me that you rank yourself among the "administrative elite". I personally have both compliments and critiques for Griffin's work thus far, but I give her alot of credit for her perseverance in the snake pit.
