Some Things Never Change
In my almost sixty years on this planet, a few things are constant. The squeaking brakes of a garbage truck haven’t changed, the plop-plop of the morning papers hitting the driveway at 5:30am hasn’t changed, and if your not too busy hugging trees, bacon and onions frying in a pan are still to die for. I’d also mention a wee sip of bourbon or Scotch, but don’t want to steal from the pundit of pickled Daniel Ruth.In a more recent category of “things never change,” controversial Hillsborough state Senator Ronda Storms has filed a yet untitled bill “to permit the delivery of an inspirational message, including a prayer or invocation, at a noncompulsory high school activity, including a student assembly, a sports event, or other school-related activity, if a majority of the participating students request the delivery of an inspirational message and select a student representative to deliver the message.”
Lord have Mercy
I cannot say I know Ronda well. I’ve had dinner with her once, sat across a picnic table eating barbecue with her once, and have watched her work a crowd at campaign forums many times. She is smart, witty, smiles a lot, and would never be confused with a shrinking violet from Voltrane. She believes what she believes without apology. Just for that, she has my admiration. Hard for a politician to survive without some form of political correctness. At the same time, I would fear crossing her path in any verbal exchange. Her daggers are long and sharp and quickly unsheathed.
Senator Storms is a conservative Republican. She is also a conservative Christian. So are the folks who keep electing her to office. She well represents the interests of those voters, as well as similar thinking citizens across the state. Fair enough!
But as a former teacher at Bloomingdale High School, she ought to know that this new bill she has sponsored is DOA, kaput, has fewer legs than a Ruskin tomato. And, I think she knows it.
I believe she is looking for debate, looking to keep her name out in front of Christian issues, and looking to keep her voters and many Christian parents happy.
I know one other thing. The ACLU, the heathen press, and the chattering class will be happy to engage.
Love you Ronda, you be rad!
