Susan Valdes recently won her second election for a Hillsborough School Board seat. This was her fourth election campaign since she had previously lost a school board race in 2000 and a county commissioner race in 2002.

To file for each campaign, a candidate has to sign a document at the Supervisor of Elections office stating he or she has read and understands the statutes relating to Florida campaign finance law. And, when each campaign finance report is due to the Elections office during a campaign cycle, that report must be signed by the candidate stating he or she has read the report and the report is accurate and complies with campaign statute.

So after four elections, one would think she’d have a clue.

Recently, I filed an official complaint with the Florida Elections Commission over 11 campaign reporting violations during her 2008 run for school board. Ten violations show her reporting two names for a single contribution and one violation shows her reporting a cash contribution of $250 when the limit as of Jan 1,2008 is $50. Maybe the $1000 per violation fine will help change her ways.

Right here, I will admit that the above violations in no way changed the outcome of the election. But Ms. Valdes has shown quite a cavalier attitude since assuming office. Remember, she spent $50,000 for on-the-job training and travel during the past four years, enough to force changes in school board policy; she had to repay 14 hours of personal phone calls this past May 2008, all made from her district expensed phone, with 4 hours of those calls to or from fellow board member April Griffin; and, a local charter school principal threatened to sue Valdes for intimidation and harassment.

Yep….maybe $1000 per violation will open her eyes to the fact that the office she holds is to be respected, and school leaders need to demonstrate superior ethics and behaviors to the citizens and children they represent.

I don't know your personal agenda for posting this blog but if what you're saying is true, we have either a pretty dumb or a pretty arrogant person on our school board. I read about her extensive travel a few months ago, but is this something new she's up to? Why can't we have honest people in public office in this county?

Mr Schmidt's "personal agenda" is quite understandable. Ms Valdes defeated Janice Torgersen (Mr Schmidt's wife) in her first run, and she defeated Mr Schmidt in her second run. Looks like payback to me, and clumsy and ineffective payback at that.

He knows how easy it is to make mistakes in campaign finance filings, which is why he tries to insinuate a bad intent when there is no evidence of anything but human fallibility. He and his wife both ran really inept campaigns and rather than admit it and move on he seems to be hewing to the GOP sore loser's strategy of trying to de-legitimize the person who actually won by twenty points by nitpicking. There are members (cough)Jennifer Faliero(cough) who are far more deserving of strokes from his flimsy chain flail because they have done things that have actually damaged the school district *while in office*.

Your blog is a flop. No-one seems interested. You still haven't figured it out have you? People won't trust you Dave. You are creepy in a used car salesman way. Additionally people just don't like you or your wife. This why the public doesn't want to hear what you have to say or elect either of you.

When someone as sorry as Valdes can beat you hands down by twenty points like she did it's time to hang it up.

You sure you want to play this game? You have alot of problems on your own filing. State statute does not exempt in-kinds to from yourself to yourself in the filing limit.

At $1000 a pop, you too have a nice little payout that you'll have to deal with. Get ready we are going for a ride!

Not to mention the potential for an ethics probe for your acceptance of a campaign contribution from Albert Elia, the husband of the sole employee of the board is responsible for supervising. Pay to play at its finest.

Susan only has one violation. The others were prior to 01/01/2008.

Is this the superior attention to detail that you claim you will bring to the board? Looks like you cannot interpret a simple financial document like a campaign finance report (AKA a BALANCE LEDGER).

I guess that would mean that you as an un-degreed individual would be no better than those you seek to pass judegement on.

You have claimed to be a christian? Judge not lest ye be judged yourself Dave!

Unlike you at least Susan and April aren't kissing the ROSSAC bunches backsides.
